Burckhard, Max, b. Korneuburg (Lower Austria), July 14, 1854, d. Vienna, March 16, 1912, writer, journalist, studied law. 1890-1898 artistic secretary and then director of the Vienna Burgtheater; cultivated contemporary drama (H. Ibsen, G. Hauptmann, A. Schnitzler, H. von Hofmannsthal), introduced popular Austrian classics into the repertoire (L. Anzengruber, F. Raimund) of the Burgtheater and engaged among others F. Mitterwurzer, A. Sandrock, L. Medelsky, O. Tressler, H. Bleibtreu and J. Kainz.


Works: Novels: Gottfried Wunderlich, 1906; Die Insel der Seligen, 1908; Aus der Mappe eines Theaterdirektors (sketches); Quer durch das Leben, 1908. - Dramas: Die Bürgermeisterwahl, 1898; 's Katherl, 1898. - Theater, 2 vols., 1905 (reviews, lectures and essays). - Legal publications.
