Burckhard, MaxBurckhard, Max, b. Korneuburg (Lower Austria), July 14, 1854, d. Vienna, March 16, 1912, writer, journalist, studied law. 1890-1898 artistic secretary and then director of the Vienna Burgtheater; cultivated contemporary drama (H. Ibsen, G. Hauptmann, A. Schnitzler, H. von Hofmannsthal), introduced popular Austrian classics into the repertoire (L. Anzengruber, F. Raimund) of the Burgtheater and engaged among others F. Mitterwurzer, A. Sandrock, L. Medelsky, O. Tressler, H. Bleibtreu and J. Kainz.
