Wölfler, Anton


Wölfler, Anton, b. Kopec, Czech Republic (then Kopetzen), Jan. 12, 1850, d. Vienna, Jan. 31, 1917, surgeon. 1876 assistant of T. Billroth, studied strictly aseptic wound treatment in Edinburgh and introduced it at Billroth's hospital in 1878. In 1881 W. performed anterior gastro-enterostomy (surgical link between the stomach and the small intestine) for the first time; was among the first to use cocaine as an anaesthetic, also revolutionised the field of thyroid surgery. 1885 head of the Surgical Department of the Poliklinik hospital in Vienna, Professor at the University of Graz from 1886, at the German University of Prague from 1896-1910.
