Wächter, Otto GustavWächter, Otto Gustav, b. Vienna, July 8, 1901, d. Rome (Italy), Aug. 14, 1949, law graduate and National Socialist politician. 1932-1934 lawyer, from 1923 member of the SA, from 1930 member of the NSDAP, held high positions in Vienna; from 1932 member of the SS (group leader). Played a leading role in the preparations for the July Putsch of 1934. Fled to Germany (deprived of Austrian citizenship). May 24, 1938 - April 30, 1939 Staatskommissar in the "liquidation ministry" under the National Socialist interior minister Seyß-Inquart, from Oct. 1939 governor of the administrative district Kraków, 1942-1944 governor of the NS Galicia district of the "general government" (Poland). After 1945 found refuge in a Catholic group in Rome under the name of Otto Reinhardt. Literature: N. v. Preradovich, Ö. höhere SS-Führer, 1987.
