Brigantium


Brigantium, former name of Bregenz. Mentioned by the geographer Strabo (64/63 B.C. - 23/26 A.C.) and the astronomer Ptolemy (around 90-168 A.C.); also mentioned in the Peutinger Table and in the Antonine Itinerary. The Notitia Dignitatum refers to Brigantium as the site of a fleet commander (Praefectus numeri barcariorum).
