Regensburg (Germany), Dec. 8, 899, East Frankish King and German Emperor; illegitimate son of the East Frankish King Karlmann. 876 Prefect of Pannonia and Carantania, where he established himself at Karnburg Palace ("Curtis Carantana"). 887 was elected East Frankish King; 896 crowned Emperor, the last of Carolingian descent. He could not prevent the disintegration of his realm and had little success in his punitive expedition against the Moravian Prince Swatopluk I. His main seat was at Regensburg. Literature: H.
