Thom, Andreas eigentlich Rudolf Csmarich


Thom, Andreas (real name: Rudolf Csmarich), b. Vienna, May 11, 1884, d. Mooskirchen (Styria), June 25, 1943, expressionist; narrative writer. 1903-1934 primary school teacher in Vienna, belonged to the circle around A. P. Gütersloh and A. Faistauer, was a friend of E. Schiele and F. Bruckner. With the "Baal" figure in his novel "Ambros Maria Baal" (1918) created the prototype of the decadent and negative hero; influenced B. Brecht. His novel cycle "Der österreichische Mensch" ("Vorlenz, der Urlauber auf Lebenszeit", 1930; "Noch spielt ein Kind", 1934; "Das Sylvesterkind", 1936; "Die ungleichen Geliebten", 1938) is written in the style of neorealism and contains aspects of social criticism.
