Tauern

Tauern (from celtic tur = gate, gateway), name of numerous non-glaciated passes and mountain ranges in the Austrian Central Alps between the Krimmler Tauern Pass in the west and the Schober Pass in the east; the Tauern mountains are divided into Hohe Tauern Range and Niedere Tauern Mountains. Passes from east to west: Krimmler Tauern Pass (alt. 2633 m); Felber Tauern Pass (2481 m); Kalser Tauern Pass (2515 m); Heiligenbluter or Rauriser Tauern Pass (2576 m, generally called Hochtor Pass), Goldberg or Fraganter Tauern Pass (wind-gap, 2754 m), Niederer Tauern Pass (also called Mallnitzer Tauern Pass, 2448 m); Hohe Tauern Pass (also Korn Tauern Pass, 2459 m), Radstädter Tauern Pass (1738 m); Rottenmanner Tauern Pass (1265 m). The Tauern road from the village of Trieben to St. Johann am Tauern links the Paltental and Pölstal valleys and served as a major road connection during Roman times (Roman milestones preserved). Several sections of the Tauern Motorway lead through long tunnels (Radstädter Tauern, Katschberg and others). The Radstädter Tauern Pass is crossed by the Radstädter Tauern Road. There is also a Tauern Railway with motorail facility (from Mallnitz, Carinthia, to Böckstein in the province of Salzburg) and a Hohe Tauern National Park.
