Moved to Vienna with his parents in 1899; Professor at the Universities of Göttingen, Munich and Berlin. genetic research on plants; one of the first to recognise the function of the constituent parts of cell plasma as carriers of genetic information. Publications: Morphologie und Physiologie des Formwechsels der Moose auf genetischer Grundlage, 1924; Über plasmatische Vererbung, 1930.
