Schreker, Franz, b. Monaco (Monte Carlo), March 23, 1878, d. Berlin (Germany), March 21, 1934. Composer, conductor and teacher. One of the most successful opera composers in Vienna between 1900 and 1920. In 1908 founded the Philharmonic Choir in Vienna, which he directed until 1920; 1912-1920 taught at the Vienna Musikhochschule*, 1920-1933 director of Musikhochschule in Berlin; teacher of E. Krenek.


Works: Operas: Der ferne Klang, 1912; Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin, 1913; Die Gezeichneten, 1918; Der Schatzgräber, 1920; Irrelohe, 1924; Der singende Teufel, 1928; Der Schmied von Gent, 1932. - Chamber music, choral works, songs. - Publications: Dichtungen, 2 vols., 1920/21.
