Schiff, Heinrich


Schiff, Heinrich, b. Gmunden (Upper Austria), Nov. 18, 1951. Cellist and conductor. Internationally successful as a solo cellist since 1973; several awards for his interpretations of Bach suites, important soloist of cello concertos (R. Schumann, A. Dvořák, D. Shostakovich and others) with international orchestras, also dedicates himself to contemporary music. Since the mid-eighties also increasingly active as a conductor; 1990-1996 first conductor of the Northern Sinfonia, 1996-1999 of the Kopenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, since 1995 of the Musikkollegium Winterthur. Numerous recordings and awards.
