Shipping: Austria primarily uses the Danube for shipping (Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Danube Ports, Danube Shipping) and Lakes Constance, Achensee and Wolfgangsee, etc. for Lake Navigation. In 1993 a total of 2,897,267 passengers were transported on Austria's lakes. Ocean shipping (Österreichischer Lloyd) has to rely on foreign ports. Austria's shipping fleet consists of 32 ships which are able to carry 290,000 tonnes. All in all shipping only makes up a very modest portion of the Austrian transportation sector. With 6.5 million tonnes, the shipping of goods via inland waterways accounted for only 4 % of the entire amount of transported goods in 1993. When the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal is completed, shipping on the Danube is expected to increase.
