Rauter, Hanns BaptistRauter, Hanns Baptist, b. Klagenfurt (Carinthia), Feb. 4, 1895, d. Walsdorper Flakte (Netherlands, executed), March 25, 1949, politician (Heimatschutz, NSDAP). Together with W. Pfrimer he founded the "Selbstschutzverband Steiermark" in 1922, in 1931 played a leading part in the Pfrimer-Putsch ; systematically led the Steirischer Heimatschutz over to the National Socialists and led the NS uprising in Carinthia in July 1934; became member of the German Reichstag in 1938, 1940 superior commander of the SS and the police in Holland. After his attempted assassination on March 6, 1945 H. Himmler ordered the execution of 225 Dutchmen. R. was extradited to Holland and sentenced to death in 1949. Literature: W.
