Vienna, Nov. 28, 1987, actor, director, script writer; married to H. Krahl; 1928 acting début at the Munich Kammerspiele theatre; 1930-1937 with H. Hilpert and G. Gründgens at various theatres in Berlin, where he worked as a director. Film directing followed, in 1937 head of the Arts Faculty, of the Babelsberg Reichsfilm Academy and 1942-1945 Ufa production manager. After 1945 he was briefly banned from working; then director at the Hamburg Kammerspiele theatre. In 1956 also at the Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna, and after 1964 at the Vienna Burgtheater. From 1962 opera director in Vienna, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Kassel and Gelsenkirchen; television series "Die Abenteuer des braven Soldaten Schwejk" (1970-1972 starring F. Muliar).
