Kärntner Tor - Kasperl (20/25)
Käs, Ferdinand Käse

Kaschauer, Jakob

Kaschauer, Jakob, b. Vienna, around 1400, d. Vienna, between March 23 and Aug. 29, 1463, painter and sculptor. 1429 on record as working in the stonemasons' lodge of St. Stephen's cathedral. Head of an important workshop; his standing as an artist is, however, hard to assess, since very few works can be definitely ascribed to him; of the still extant fragments of the altar of Freising (1443) only the statue of the Virgin Mary is regarded as his own work.

Literature: E. Baum, Kat. des Museums ma. ö. Kunst, 1971; NDB.
