Hopfner, Friedrich, b. Trutnov, Czech Republic (then Trautenau), Oct. 28, 1881, d. Lake Hinterstein (Tyrol), Sept. 5, 1949 (drowned), geodesist and geophysicist, notable planetologist. 1921 chief astronomer at the Federal Office of Calibration and Surveying in Vienna, 1936 professor at the University of Technology in Vienna, 1948/49 rector.
