EcuEcu (French = shield). The first French taler coin; abbreviation for "European Currency Unit", unit of account of the EU; used in all official accounting for all spheres of the EU from 1981 to 1998. Discontinued in 1999 with the introduction of the Euro, of which it is the exact equivalent. Corresponds to ATS 13.7167 (as of January 9, 1995).
