Danube Island: Copa Kagrana

Donauinsel, Vienna, island recreation area enclosed by the River Danube and by the New Danube (swimming, surfing, rowing, cycling, ball games, etc.), 21 km long and up to 250 m wide; in a south-easterly direction it extends from the intake structure at Langenzersdorf (Lower Austria) to where the New Danube joins the main stream of the Danube near the Lobau oil transshipping port. In 1972 digging started on the former flood plains for the New Danube (flood protection basin), which is about 200 m wide today; in 1987 work on the Donauinsel was finished. The "Copa Kagrana" beach near the Vienna International Centre has numerous restaurants and leisure facilities.
