Composer and music publisher in Vienna, pupil of Michael Haydn in Salzburg; in 1818 founded a music publishing house with P. Cappi; in 1824 founded his own company (publishing works by Beethoven and others, as well as D.'s own compositions; was also Schubert's main publisher) which soon became a centre of the Vienna music scene; in 1851 sold the publishing house. D.'s compositions are related to the prevailing tastes of the era; only one piece has survived: a waltz which Beethoven used as the basis for his 33 "D. Variations" (op. 120). Works: Approx. 200 compositions: singspiele, piano sonatas and sonatinas, pastoral mass. Literature: L. Kanter, Leben und Kirchenkompositionen von A. D., doctoral thesis, Vienna 1957.
