Vienna, Aug. 20, 1821, writer of art books and copperplate engraver, as administrator of the Imperial court library he systematized its collection of copperplate engravings; pioneered the modern, critical science of copperplate engraving; his main publications include "Le peintre graveur" (21 vols., 1803-1821) and "Anleitung zur Kupferstichkunde" ("Instructions On The Science of Copperplate Engraving") ( 2 vols., 1821).
