Bartsch, Adam Johann von, b. Vienna, Aug. 17, 1757, d. Vienna, Aug. 20, 1821, writer of art books and copperplate engraver, as administrator of the Imperial court library he systematized its collection of copperplate engravings; pioneered the modern, critical science of copperplate engraving; his main publications include "Le peintre graveur" (21 vols., 1803-1821) and "Anleitung zur Kupferstichkunde" ("Instructions On The Science of Copperplate Engraving") ( 2 vols., 1821).
