Ruf, Der Ruhm, Franz

Rugier

Rugi, East Germanic tribe. After the disintegration of the Hun empire, the R. empire developed in the Eastern Waldviertel and in the Weinviertel (centre near Krems) after 455. From the Vita Severini, it is known that weekly markets were held North of the Danube. Later, the R. extended their sphere of influence east of the River Enns Noricum Ripense. In 487 and 488, the R. were beaten by the troops of Odoaker ; those who survived went to Italy together with the Ostrogoths. The R. were Arians.
