Paris (France), March 20, 1811, d. Schönbrunn Palace (Vienna), July 22, 1832, only son of Napoleon I by his marriage to Archduchess Marie Louise. 1811-1814 "King of Rome". When Napoleon abdicated in 1814 and 1815 he had his son pronounced Emperor Napoleon II, but he was not recognised by the victorious nations. His mother took him to Vienna, where he was educated under the care of his grandfather, Emperor Franz I. 1817 was given the dominion of Reichstadt (Zákupy, Czech Republic) in northern Bohemia and the title of "Duke of R." in lieu of his right of succession to Parma (after his mother Marie Louise).
