Paumgartner, Bernhard, b. Vienna, Nov. 14, 1887, d. Salzburg, July 27, 1971, musicologist (specialized in W. A. Mozart), conductor, composer and librettist; son of the singer Rosa Papier-Paumgartner, in his first marriage son in law of P. Rosegger. 1917-1938 and 1945-1959 director of the Mozarteum in Salzburg; co-founder of the Salzburg Festival, from 1922 in charge of the Mozarteum Orchestra, founded in 1952 the Camerata Academica; 1949 professor at the Vienna Academy of Music. Founder and director of the international summer courses at the Mozarteum; 1960-1971 president of the management committee of the Salzburg Festival. Awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1962.


Works: Operas, singspiele, ballets, music for stage, lieder, orchestral works, Mozart arrangements, translations of libretti. - Writings: Mozart, 1927 (expanded 1967); Salzburg, 1935; Leopold Mozarts Briefe an seine Tochter, 1936 (ed. with O.
