Mystik

Mysticism: Persons who are capable of mystic experiences such as vision, audition und stigmatisation have appeared in Austria since the time of St. Severinus. Austrian mystics who had a beneficial and stimulating effect in times of religious turmoil and revival included St. Gebhard, Petrus Canisius, Marco d´Aviano, St. Clemens M. Hofbauer and Hildegard Burjan. Several rulers - including Emperor Leopold I - were also mystics. Important literary records of mystical experiences have been handed down by the Carthusians at Mauerbach and Gaming, and the first professors of the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the Universities of Vienna and (more recently) Innsbruck (J. Sudbrack).

Literature: P. M. Zulehner and A. Heller (eds.) Von der Sprengkraft der Mystik, 1989.
