KartäuserCarthusians, religious order, traditionally devote themselves to a solitary life as hermits. The first Austrian Carthusians came from the monastery in Seitz (southern Styria) (Žiče, Slovenia) the oldest Carthusian monastery on German-speaking territory (founded in 1165). There were three big Carthusian monasteries in Lower Austria, which were all closed by Joseph II in 1782: Mauerbach (1313), Gaming (1330) and Aggsbach (1380). Literature: J. Hogg, Kartäuser, in: Theologische Realenzyklopädie, vol. 17, 1988.
