Freie Gewerkschaften

Freie Gewerkschaften (Free trade unions), Trade unions organised within the context of the socialist workers' movement. Unlike the Christian trade unions, Freie Gewerkschaften were organised to reflect the class struggle. In Austria the free trade associations consolidated in 1892 and organised the first Austrian conference of trade unions in Vienna in 1893. In 1921 the Freie Gewerkschaften had their highest number of members with 1,079,777. They were dissolved in February 1934, after 1945 their assets were returned to the Socialist Trade Union group of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions.
