Florian, MaximilianFlorian, Maximilian, b. Klagenfurt (Carinthia), Dec. 20, 1901, d. Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria), Jan. 24, 1982, painter. Since he came from humble origins, was not able to study at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (from 1922-1930) until having obtained a scholarship. Influenced by H. Boeckl, he represented an expressive-realistic style in painting. F. also created sculptures and tapestry devoted to religious subjects. Was decorated by Pope Paul VI. for his monumental work "Die Auserwählten des Lebens" (The Last Supper). Awarded the Austrian State Prize for graphic arts in 1935. Literature: R. Schmidt (ed.), M.
