ASFINAG, Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-AktiengesellschaftASFINAG, Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft, highway and road construction financing company, owned by the Republic of Austria, provides funding for the construction and maintenance of Autobahns and Schnellstraße roads in Austria, founded in 1982 to finance special road construction companies in Austria, since 1987 also finances building construction projects and since 1989 high-capacity railway lines. In 1992 ASFINAG spent ATS 3.18 bn on road construction, ATS 3.61 bn on high-capacity railway lines and ATS 320 m for building construction projects. From 1997 ASFINAG was no longer financed by the state budget ("New ASFINAG") and took on its debts of ATS 76 bn. At the same time it was provided with a nominal capital ATS 8 bn and since that time has enjoyed the usufruct of the high-calibre Austrian road network and is thus entitled to charge tolls. In return, ASFINAG is obliged to ensure the structural and organisational maintenance of the road network as well as to guarantee the completion of the motorway and Schnellstraße road network as planned. Tolls on the Toll Roads are levied on behalf of ASFINAG by the Alpen Straßen AG (ASG) and the ÖSAG. In 1999 ASFINAG spent ATS 4 bn on the construction, expansion and extension of Austria's motorways and Schnellstraße roads; ATS 1.7 bn was spent on reconstruction and maintenance.
