Constant), b. Ljubljana, Slovenia (then Laibach), April 11, 1818, d. Berchtesgaden (Germany), Aug. 17, 1893, librarian and lexicographer; father of Alfred Wurzbach. Served as an officer in the army before he became a librarian at Lemberg (Lvív) in 1844; worked at the administrative library of the Ministry of the Interior in Vienna from 1849. After retirement moved to Berchtesgaden in 1874. His major project was the compilation of a 60-volume biographical encyclopaedia on the Austrian Emperors, "Biographisches Lexikon des Kaiserthums Österreich" (60 vols., 1856-1891). Further works: Die Volkslieder der Polen und Ruthenen, 1846; Bibliograph.-statist. Übersicht der Literatur des österreichischen Kaiserstaates, 3 parts, 1853-1857; Das Schillerbuch, 1859; Joseph Haydn und sein Bruder Michael, 1862; Glimpf und Schimpf in Spruch und Wort, 1864; Mozartbuch, 1868; F. Grillparzer, 1871; Zur Sbg. Biographik, 1872; Ein Madonnenmaler unserer Zeit: E. Steinle, 1879. - Also wrote epics using his pseudonym.
