Schranz, Karl, b. St. Anton am Arlberg (Tyrol), Nov. 18, 1938, racing skier and hotelier. Serial winner in the Skiing World Cup (overall World Cup champion in 1969 and 1970) and three times world champion (1962 in downhill and alpine combination, 1970 in giant slalom); at the Olympic Games in Grenoble in 1968 was allowed to repeat his run when obstructed the first time, achieved best time but was ultimately disqualified. Was not allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in Sapporo in 1972 because he was said to have violated the amateur rule; on his return to Austria was given a winner's welcome but ended his career.
