Rudolff, ChristoffRudolff, Christoff, b. Jawor, Poland (then Jauer), 1500 (?), d. Vienna, 1545, mathematician. Studied under Grammateus in Vienna. Taught privately, not at a university. Was an eminent arithmetical genius and major contributor to the advancement of algebra and arithmetics. He simplified equations with unknown factors and developed a modern set of symbols; introduced the radical sign for square roots. Works: Behend und hübsch Rechnung, 1525; Künstlich rechnung mit der ziffer und den zalpfennigen, 1526; Exempelbüchlein, 1530. Literature: M.
