Reichenfels


Reichenfels, Carinthia, market town in the district of Wolfsberg, alt. 809 m, pop. 2,073, area 87.16 km2, summer tourism (15,442 overnight stays in 1992), situated in the upper Lavanttal valley. - Kölzersauerbrunn well; machine manufacture, wood-working industry. - In the Middle Ages Reichenfels profited greatly from the mining of silver (reich = rich). Late-Gothic parish church (first documented mention 1285) with Romanesque core, Baroque extensions and interior; circular charnel house; fortress ruins; Romanesque-Gothic Oswaldkirche church in Sommerau; parish church of St. Peter im Lavanttal, oldest church (probably 931) in the upper Lavanttal valley, choir from the 14th century, 1492 late-Gothic extensions with impressive tower, Baroque alterations from the 17th century.
