Oppolzer, Theodor vonOppolzer, Theodor von, b. Prague (Czech Republic), Oct. 26, 1841, d. Vienna, Dec. 26, 1886, astronomer and mathematician; son of Johann von Oppolzer. From 1875 university professor in Vienna. Pioneering work: calculation of the paths of planets and comets, graduating and theoretical astronomy (calculation of all eclipses of the sun and moon between 1207 B.C. and 2163 A.D.). Works: Lehrbuch zur Bahnbestimmung der Kometen und Planeten, 2 vols, 1870/1880; Syzygientafeln für den Mond, 1881; Canon der Finsternisse, 1887. Literature: ÖBL.
