Littrow, Joseph Johann, b. Horovský Týn, Czech Republic (then Bischofteinitz), March 13, 1781, d. Vienna, Nov. 30, 1840, astronomer, father of Karl Ludwig von Littrow. 1807 Professor in Kraków, 1809 at the University of Kasan (Russia), 1819-1840 Director of the Vienna Observatory, 1834-1837 professor for Higher Mathematics. A lunar crater was named after him.


Publications: Theoret. und pract. Astronomie, 3 parts, 1821 to 1827; Die Wunder des Himmels, 4 vols, 1834-1836; Atlas des gestirnten Himmels, 1839.
