Landespatron - Landrat (22/25)
Ländle Ländler

Landler

Landler: 160 Protestant families (624 persons) were forcibly removed from the Salzkammergut area in 7 transports to Transylvania from July 1734 until November 1737 where farms were allocated, mainly in Neppendorf and Großau near Hermannstadt (Sibiu, Romania). Even though one quarter of the deported people died within the first 18 months, the Landler people managed to survive as a community and kept their dialect until the late 20th century. Only in 1990 did the community of about 5,000 people start breaking up because the younger members moved to Germany and Austria.

Literature: E. Buchinger, Die "Landler" in Siebenbürgen, 1980; R. Girtler, Verbannt und vergessen. Eine untergehende deutsch-sprachige Kultur in Rumänien, 1992.
