Kals am GroßglocknerKals am Großglockner, Tirol, municipality in the district of Lienz, alt. 1,325 m, pop. 1,272, area 180.54 km2, tourist centre (138,129 overnight stays mostly in the summer) situated in the Kals valley to the south of the Großglockner mountain, between the Granatspitz mountain and the Schober mountains. - Sports hostel, Kalserbach storage power station (built in 1950, 11.7 MW; power station near Kals, storage facility near St. Johann). Starting point of the first ascent of the Großglockner peak in 1853; parish church in Ködnitz built in 1439 with Classicist alterations made between 1818 and 1821 and frescoes from 1960, Romanesque filial church in Großdorf with a two-storeyed chapel and a Gothic spire; several chapels and shrines.
