Heckel, Johann Jakob, b. Mannheim, Germany, Jan. 23, 1790, d. Vienna, March 1, 1857, zoologist. Instrumental in establishing the renown of ichthyology as an academic discipline in Austria; from 1820 at the Hof-Naturalienkabinett in Vienna, whose fish collection was greatly enlarged on account of his work..
