Gaisberger, Josef


Gaisberger, Josef, b. Maria Brunnenthal (Upper Austria), Jan. 6, 1792, d. St Florian (Upper Austria), Sept. 5, 1871, Augustinian Canon, historian, archaeologist, provided spiritual guidance and pastoral care from 1816-1818, 1818-1856 teacher at the lyceum (later grammar school) in Linz, curator of the collections of the Monastery of St Florian. A founding member of the Musealverein (museum association), and compiled the first library catalogue in 1845. From 1838 directed, inter alia, the excavations at Schlögen, Oberranna, Lauriacum (Lorch/Upper Austria, important Roman settlement) Wels and Überackern.
