Franzos, Karl Emil© Copyright Karl Emil Franzos, painting by P. Levy, 1893 Franzos, Karl Emil, b. Czortków (Ukraine), Oct. 25, 1848, d. Berlin (Germany), Jan. 28, 1904, author and journalist. After he had studied law in Vienna and Graz he embarked on a journalistic career. Wrote books on travel about the Eastern crown lands ("Aus Halb-Asien. Kulturbilder aus Galizien, der Bukovina, Südrußland und Rumänien", 2 vols., 1876), novellas and novels on the life of Jews in Eastern Galicia and of Ruthenian farmers. In 1879 F. published for the first time ever the works of G. Büchner and his unpublished manuscripts. From 1884-1886 published the weekly newspaper "Wiener Illustrierte Zeitung". In 1886 moved to Berlin and edited the magazine "Deutsche Dichtung" (German poetry) until 1904. His most important work, "Der Pojaz", an entwicklungsroman, was published posthumously in 1905.
