Ernst der Tapfere, Babenberger


Ernst (the Brave), b. 1027, d. near Homburg an der Unstrut (Germany), June 10, 1075, Babenberg, 1055-1075 Margrave of Austria; followed his father Adalbert in 1055 and succeeded in uniting the marks of Bohemia and Hungary with the mark of Austria. During his time, Kuenring officials began to colonize parts of the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. At the beginning of the investiture conflict, E. supported Henry IV and fell in battle against the Saxons.
