Vienna, March 28, 1849, botanist, librarian, from 1840 university professor and director of the Botanical Gardens in Vienna, had the museum (now the Botanical Institute) built there in 1844. Editor of reference works on Hungarian history, interested in Old High German and classical philology, as well as Chinese culture; involved in the founding of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. 1848 member of the frankfurt parliament and the Kremsier Imperial Diet. Publications: Genera plantarum, 1836-1850; Anfangsgründe der chines. Grammatik, 1845. Literature: ÖBL.
