ElleElle, old measure of length for cloth (similar to English "ell"); originally equal to the length of the forearm; later, its length varied considerably from country to country. The (long) Viennese ell measured 77.76 cm, but there was also a short Viennese ell. Two iron rods which used to serve as standard measures can still be seen at the Giants´ Doorway (main entrance) of St. Stephan´s Cathedral, Vienna.
