Braila (Rumania), Aug. 21, 1876, d. Vienna, Oct. 21, 1931, neurologist and brain researcher; J. Wagner-Jauregg´s favorite student; lecturer from 1913, professor of psychiatry and neurology from 1921. In 1917 E. documented epidemic encephalitis, discovered the chewing, swallowing and sleep centres in the brain (Über den Schlaf, 1925) and wrote the "Atlas der Cytoarchitektonik der Hirnrinde" (1925), promoted the collection and study of outstanding brains, founded the Institute for Brain Research in 1931. E. was also an outstanding pilot, one of Austria's first sport pilots, and from 1910 president of the Austrian Aeroclub.
