Chmel, JosephChmel, Joseph, b. Olomouc, Czech Republic (then Olmütz), March 18, 1798, d. Vienna, Nov. 28, 1858, Augustinian canon, historian, 1826 librarian of St. Florian Abbey, 1834 keeper of the Court and State Archives (Vice-director 1846). One of the first members of the Academy of Sciences and director of its historical committee. Untiring researcher although he lacked both the gift of presentation and a critical mind. Works: Beiträge zur Geschichte Kg. Friedrichs IV., 2 vols., 1837-1840; Regesta Friderici III.
