Alemannen


Alemanni, western Germanic tribe settled on the Roman Limes between the Rhine and Danube in the 2nd-3rd centuries, spread to the south (Switzerland, Vorarlberg) around 500, Christianised under Franconian influence from 600, formed the duchy of Swabia from the 10th century. Inhabitants of Vorarlberg and the Lechtal Valley in Tyrol speak Alemannic dialects.
