Albrecht VII, b. Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria), Nov. 13, 1559, d. Brussels (Belgium), Nov. 15, 1621, second-youngest son of Emperor Maximilian II. Consecrated Cardinal Archbishop of Toledo in 1577, 1583 Viceroy of Portugal and 1595 Governor-General of the southern Netherlands. His marriage with Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of Philipp II of Spain, made him Regent of the Netherlands. The sovereigns distinguished themselves through their love of art. Since they had no children, the Netherlands returned to Spain, but Isabella Clara Eugenia remained statthalter.
