Schubert marks the transition between Wiener Singspiel and the romantic opera. He wrote about 15 works for the stage, which are however, without any importance for the history of the opera. (Singspiel, magic operas, great operas). His operas lack dramatic characterisation and stage effectiveness. The lyrical element predominates.
