Jacques Offenbach is known as the creator of the musical genre that we associate with "operetta today. On October 16th, 1858 "Die Hochzeit bei Laternenschein was first performed at the Carl-Theater, Vienna, in the translation of Treumann. In the following years Offenbachs works dominated the Vienna operetta theatres until Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) managed to produce works of equal quality. Offenbachs success with "Die schöne Helena (performed at the Theater an der Wien on March 17th, 1865) was the impetus for Johann Strauß to try his hand at this genre after 1870.
