The Blue Danube Waltz - is Vienna situated on the Danube?

© Photo Archive Schilder
Frequent flooding made people plan a regulation of the Danube as early as 1860. The construction work for the new river bed was carried out between 1870 -1875. The city centre was still far removed from the river bank. After 1980 the Danube peninsula was created – an enormous sports and recreational area. The main purpose of the island, however, was the protection of the city from sudden dangerous floods.
The erection of many new buildings, e.g. the Vienna UNO-City, has brought the town much closer to the Danube and you get the impression that Vienna is really situated on the Danube.
