Johann Strauß in America |
In summer 1872 Johann Strauß travelled to the World Peace Jubilee at Boston. The festival was connected with memories of the American Independence Movement, which had begun in Boston and had resulted in the foundation of the "United States of America. Within three weeks Strauß took part in 16 of the 23 concerts. For this celebration a special Coliseum had been constructed, with a seating capacity of 30,000 people. Strauß, who had an orchestra consisting of 800 members, conducted only works of his own. One of his contributions to the 100th anniversary of the USA was the Jubilee Waltz, first performed on June 29th, 1872.
