Johann Strauß (Sohn) A Survivor from Warsaw: Reflections on the work
Arnold Schönberg

In 1947, commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation, Schönberg wrote "A Survivor from Warsaw", a composition which cannot be fitted into any traditional musical genre. The text he used is based on a story he had been told by a Russian dancer in Los Angeles in 1947. Schönberg was deeply touched by it, because friends of his had lost their lives in a similar way during the NS regime. Maybe this shock but especially his bad state of health allowed Schönberg only to write down the particell (short version of a score), whereas the complete score was elaborated by René Leibowitz, a Webern pupil and good friend of Schönberg's, who himself came from Warsaw.
